Tired of the restlessness of Johannesburg’s streets? Then choose a
Hyde Park property, or Parktown property and find peace in some of Johannesburg’s oldest and most peaceful suburbs.
Welcome to our suburbs: Hyde Park, Parktown North, Parkwood, Parkview and Parkhurst – all affectionately known as "The Parks", as well as Greenside and Westcliff; suburbs that when gently probed, still reveal grand homes, children riding their bikes and neighbours who know and make time for one another on a regular basis.
ParkwoodParkwood property is a perfect example. This suburb, situated between the major Rosebank ventricles of Jan Smuts Avenue and Oxford Street, reminds one of the Houghton of days gone by. Parkwood property dates back to the early 1920s and 1940s, with many of the original homes still to be found on erven ranging from 1 000m² to 2 500m². Because
Parkwood property is established property, very little vacant land is available, and prices vary depending on size and position; one can expect to pay anything in the range of the mid-millions for an old home to around R5 million for a brand new Parktown property. Another spinoff of the established nature of Parktown property is that there are very few towhouses, clusters and apartment blocks in the suburb.
Parktown NorthIf you drive for another five minutes, you’ll find yourself in the middle of all that
Parktown North property has on offer. Some of the larger properties have been subdivided to cut down on maintenance and rates, but the resulting clusters still offer exciting propositions and are still in line with the ambience of
Parktown North property. Most clusters are as large as 700m² and fetch between R3, 5 to R6 million. If you have your eye on this sort of Parktown North property, you will probably be a professional or an executive, desiring the lock-up-and-go lifestyle on offer. Parktown North property is situated in one of Johannesburg’s most beautiful suburbs infused with old, established trees, privacy and hints of understated class and old money. After World War Two, Parkhurst property plots were bought by the government and allocated to returning soldiers.
Parkhurst property today have the same basic plan, parquet flooring and plain ceilings.
GreensideHave you considered a luxury
Greenside property? It is one of the only “dry” suburbs in the
Johannesburg property area: nowhere will you find a bottle store. The area was initially a farm founded by the Geldenhuys brothers, and was established in 1931. One of the Geldenhuys brothers, Louw was a compassionate man: when WWI was over, he provided landless men with work by getting them to construct Emmarentia Dam at the bottom of his property. You will find all the Greenside property you need adjacent to Emmarantia, which incidentally is host to the first ever mosque in the Northern Suburbs. Today, Greenside property lives happily along many well-known restaurants like 141, Bite, The Circle, Doppio Zero, Yum, Adega, Mama’s Shebeen and many more. If you have your eye on a
Greenside property, be prepared to pay anything from between R700 000 to R2, 5 million for larger, renovated homes.
WestcliffWestcliff property lies between Parkview and Houghton and benefits from lying close to major roads. If you have designs on a
Westcliff property, be prepared for a slower pace where one can enjoy the Killarney Mall, the Mall of Rosebank, the lovely village of Parkhurst, the Apartheid Museum and the National Museum of Military History: all around the corner and all designed to provide hours of enjoyment. The Johannesburg Zoo is also within a stone throw’s distance. Westcliff property is older and more gracious than anywhere else in Johannesburg and includes some highly prized and historic Sir Herbert Baker homes on large properties with grand gardens and broad streets that are lined with large, old and lovely trees.
