Langebaan Property

Looking for Langebaan properties? Welcome to Langebaan, just 120 km north of Cape Town and fondly referred to as the ‘Jewel of the West Coast’, snuggled against the 17-kilometre long lagoon. It is perhaps one of South Africa’s oldest towns and has a rich and colourful history that will fill many volumes. Before the Europeans arrived here more than 400 years ago, the area was frequented by the Khoi and San people, and even evidence of much much earlier human habitation, dating back aeons is found in Eve’s Footprint in the West Coast National Park adjacent to Langebaan. More evidence of a very different prehistoric world is found just 20 km east of Langebaan at the West Coast Fossil Park, arguably one of the world’s richest fossil sites.

The name Langebaan is derived from the long beach on which the town is situated. Langebaan, as it was known since 1922, was first laid out around 1870, and was then called Geytenbergsfontein, and situated on the farm De Stompe Hoek. The development of the town was primarily due to whaling activities, which ceased in the 1960’s. The huge harpoon decorating the entrance to the municipal offices in Langebaan is a reminder of a bygone era.

Modern-day properties in Langebaan are a perfect blend between the old and the new. Primarily a holiday town, it offers all the amenities the modern holidaymaker and fun seekers demand. The Langebaan lagoon is undeniably the focal point of all holiday activities. Yet our activities are not restricted to South Africa’s major holiday periods; every weekend is a mini holiday. Being only 90 minutes from Cape Town properties on the free-running R27, Langebaan is a mecca for kite surfing, yachting, fishing, kayaking, golfing and bowling. Langebaan has twice hosted the world kite surfing championships.

For those who want to take a break from water sports and other fun activities, the neighbouring West Coast National Park which embraces the Langebaan lagoon, offers nature lovers a holiday within a holiday. The lagoon and its surrounding land are a world Ramsar site, offer unparalleled viewing of birds on their transcontinental migrations. During the wildflower season, the countryside is transformed into a tapestry of colour and texture on a majestic scale. Antelope and mammals of various kinds abound especially in the Postberg region of the Park. For the grand finale, watch the whales and dolphins frolic in the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean; a common sight nowadays.

And when the breathtaking sun sets over Langebaan, it’s time to savour our restaurants, casinos and sunset boat trips where cuisine to satisfy the most fastidious palate is served. Despite being a vibrant holiday town, Langebaan has managed to retain its tranquil character, with many a visitor has commented on the cleanliness and peacefulness of Langebaan.

Langebaan is not just a place to holiday; it’s also a place to stay. Langebaan properties are highly esteemed by virtually all visitors, both local and abroad, who hardly leave without enquiring about the availability and affordability of property here.

Langebaan properties comprise the full spectrum of residential and holiday accommodation. From multimillion Rand, three-storey, beachfront mansions, to comfortable and affordable houses, cottages, townhouses, flats, vacant land and even caravan park stands. Langebaan also has an abundance of multi-bedroom guesthouses, B&Bs, self-catering units and back-packer’s accommodation. The character of the various residential areas differs considerably. From unsecured areas where only normal municipal standards apply, to secure areas where the architectural style and finish is tightly controlled. The average size of a garden plot is approximately 500-800 m2, but for those who require a more expansive environment, Langebaan also offers smallholdings of approximately two hectares.

Owners of Langebaan properties and visitors to this charming town are treated annually to the West Coast Arts Festival, the Stompneus Darby, the Spring Wildflower spectacular and the many regular sports and cultural events held all year round. For acquiring one of the Langebaan properties, your reward is a tranquil and healthy lifestyle, and the reassurance of a sound investment. See you soon!
