The Highveld Ridge lies in the south western region of Mpumalanga and takes in the towns of Standerton, Bethal, Trichardt, Secunda, Evander, Leandra and Delmas. During late summer the area is transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour with a carpet of blooming cosmos flowers. No wonder it is also referred to as Cosmos Country. Secunda is one of the prime areas for real estate in South Africa
Secunda was established during 1975 when the South African government gave Sasol permission to build a second oil-from-coal plant in order to reduce the country's dependence on oil imports. The plant now produces 29% of South Africa’s liquid fuel and it is the only place in the world where petrol is made out of coal on a commercial basis.
Sasol Secunda is not only the biggest factory site in the world, it also boasts the biggest underground coal mining complex in the world.
The town has 42249 residents with another 171072 living in the nearby Embalenhle. Most residents either directly or indirectly depend on Sasol for their income.
The surrounding area features open grassland, vleis and low hills, and is a major agricultural production centre.
Although the town does not have the normal entertainment that city dwellers have become accustomed to it does have its own attractions.
Residents can drive to and from work within in about 10 minutes. Play a game of golf on any of five courses situated within a 40 km radius of the town. The Johannes Stegman theatre in the center of town regularly offers top class shows and local school activities. The central business district has become a regional shopping centre and attracts many shoppers from other towns in the region. Graceland Casino also attracts many visitors and has become a major landmark.
Visitors to the area can stay over in a number of excellent guest houses or the hotel at Lake Umuzi. Read Less
