The Simon's Town property region is steeped in history. Simon van der Stel discovered the area during a reconnaissance mission in November 1687 and identified the bay as an ideal anchorage during the winter storms that lashed Table Bay. However, it was only in 1794 that the Dutch East India Company decreed it their official winter anchorage.
Today the Simon's Town property region is a thriving settlement that manages to retain its historic village atmosphere. This wonderful area offers something for everyone - from quiet mountain- hikes or rides, to walks along the many small bays with numerous rock pools to explore. For the less energetic there is the new Marina, from where you can catch a ferry to Cape Point around the Bay or to Seal Island, or alternatively just mess around among the boats. Boulders Beach in Simon's Town is the site of a thriving African Penguin colony, the only African Penguin colony to be re-established on the mainland. This attraction is touted as one of the 'must see' experiences of Cape Town!
There are approximately 6000 houses in the Simons' Town property region, the majority of which have sea views. Homes vary from dressed stone Victorian to modern town- or cluster home complexes. Prices vary from R800k to R10 million+ and the majority are freehold.
Simon's Town is extremely well served with all necessary amenities located within half an hour's drive. The town itself is tourist-orientated but does have a sprinkling of convenience stores for those inevitable emergencies. Most important banks either have agencies or ATM's available in the area. Longbeach Shopping Mall at Sun Valley is 10 minutes' drive away and boasts a variety of brand name shops, restaurants, branches of all major banks, as well as the usual mix of shops present in a standard shopping centre.
The Fish Hoek property area, also 10 minutes away, has a wider selection of retail spaces, as well as comprehensive medical facilities that include a Medi Cross and Provincial Hospital. More specialised medical facilities are half an hour's drive away at Constantiaberg and Claremont. Schools are well catered for in the area, with good government schools in both Simon's Town and Fish Hoek. There are also excellent private schools close by and day-care facilities are plentiful.
Sporting facilities abound. Simon's Town Country Club caters for golf, bowls and squash. Most sports disciplines have clubs in Fish Hoek. The Ski Boat Club at Millers Point has launching facilities for members and guests as well as charter contacts. There are also various dive schools in the bay offering diving instruction and charters. False Bay is a sought-after diving area during winter because the bay offers protection from storms.
The Simon's Town property region is ideally positioned for all Cape Town's tourist facilities. Cape Point, Table Mountain, the Constantia Wine Route, Stellenbosch Wine Route, Paarl Wine Route, V&A Waterfront and Cape Town International Airport are all within easy reach.
