Westville is a very sought after area because of the esteemed reputations of the local schools and universities, its convenient location and strong sense of family and community.
This prime suburb has always served as a gentrified, slower paced suburb of Durban - possibly because of its history as farming land during the early 1920s, and it is here that people head for more of a ‘country’ lifestyle. It may not evoke quite the beauty of Hillcrest, but the homes here are set on large properties. The heart of Westville surrounds the beautiful Palmiet Nature reserve; homes around this area are privileged with breath-taking views.
Westville has been the chosen suburb by families for many years. Close by to the city but offering a tranquil and amiable neighborhood. Most career driven long standing residents are now opting to move to the, rapidly developing, northern suburbs, however, there is always a demand for property in this fitting location. Unlike its surrounding suburbs, Westville has very little vacant land available. Further development sees most developers either; renovating older homes and modernizing their features or purchasing and breaking down existing property for land. The shortage of vacant land has reflected in an increase in Westville property prices over the last 10 years.
The Pavilion Shopping Centre is one of Westville’s renowned landmarks; recently renovated, the mall offers great shopping and entertainment.
The Westville campus of the University of Kwa Zulu Natal is situated in the suburb and, aside from being a rather pretty campus, also boasts a Hindu temple and an Islamic place of worship - a reflection of its multi-cultural student body, who come here to study science, engineering, humanities and social science, among other degrees.
Pristine office parks have been developed in the outer Westville areas, attracting a few major companies and professional firms, where it is slightly cooler than Durban and bounded by the N3, M19 and M13, making their offices accessible.
