Yzerfontein property should not be missed when looking for property on the West Coast. This hidden jewel was established in 1937 on the farm Yzerfontein. Farmers from the surrounding farmlands used to ride with their horse driven carts to let their sheep come and graze there and at the same time, enjoy the sea breeze coming in from the Atlantic Ocean. A small peninsula, called Skaapeiland (Sheep Island) was given its name because of that fact. A small harbour with a jetty was built at a later stage and a fish cannery was established. The fish cannery unfortunately, is no more, but the harbour is in the process of being rebuilt and strengthened to withstand the breakers. A big rock in the sea provides visitors with Yzerfontein’s beacon, called Meeurots (Gull Rock) and can be seen from numerous vantage points.
An easy drive on the R27, only 87km out of Cape Town Central takes you to Yzerfontein property. The mild climate, the safe environment with only one access road (R315), the beautiful white sixteen mile beach in “old” Yzerfontein, the surfer’s beach and other beaches make this little fisherman’s holiday village an ideal place to retire or just to come and relax for weekends or holidays. Whales and dolphins are frequently spotted here as well. The surrounding fynbosch areas with its birdlife and bucks will revive you and give you that “back to nature” feeling. Besides Yzerfontein property, this village boasts guest houses, self catering flats or cottages and a caravan park next door to the sixteen mile beach. The fisherman’s harbour is extensively used by small boats and when there is a “snoek run”, the excitement in the harbour is something to be experienced.
